To Become a Certified RT Provider you must conduct a 6 month case study with one family and child with whom you are using RT. At the end of each month, you must submit a report on your case study as described below. In addition, at the end of the 2nd, 4th, and 6th months you must submit a video recording of you providing RT to this parent and child. The procedures for becoming certified are outlined on Table 1 and described below.

Certified RT Provider must successfully demonstrate the following three professional competencies.
- Understand the rationale and procedures for developing and implementing a sequence of RT intervention sessions that are appropriate for addressing the needs of both parents and their children.
- Use RT strategies as a means for interacting more responsively to promote children’s use of pivotal developmental behaviors.
- Conduct an RT intervention session with a parent and child as described in the RT curriculum guide, Guidelines for Conducting Intervention Session (Chapter 8).
To demonstrate proficiency in these competencies you must successfully meet the following three requirements.
First, submit a monthly case report on one family with whom you are using the Responsive Teaching curriculum for a period of 6 months. This activity should commence within 2 months of completion of the Getting Started workshop.
Each of these monthly case reports should include the following information:
- Developmental history of the child
- Concerns of the child and parents that are being addressed during intervention
- A copy of the RT session plans used during the month, and a discussion of the rationale for creating these plans
- A summary of the child’s progress, along with a discussion of the reasons for this progress
We will use the case reports from the 5th and 6th months to determine that you have demonstrated proficiency with regard to the first competency:
Competency 1. Understand the rationale and procedures for developing and implementing a sequence of RT intervention sessions that are appropriate for addressing the needs of both parents and their children.
Second, every other month while case studies are taking place (e.g., end of 2nd , 4th and 6th months), submit a video recording of you conducting an RT session with the parent and child with whom you are doing your case study.

Video Recording Procedures and Feedback
All video observations can be recorded in one of three different formats: VHS, DVD, or Mini DV (Digital Video). For each of these recordings it is critical that that the audio be clear enough to hear what is taking place, and that the camera is positioned so that we can see the faces of the participants as much as possible - parent, professional and child. The video should not include distractions that occur during the session, (e.g., dogs, telephone calls or television) and people other than the participants. |
Third, demonstrate on the third video recorded intervention session (6th month video) that you can effectively conduct an RT session according to the criteria that are listed on the Intervention Session Guide that is on page 115 of Autism and Developmental Delays in Young Children (Mahoney & MacDonald, 2007). This recording will be used to determine that providers have demonstrated proficiency with regard to the second and third competencies:
Competency 2. Use RT strategies as a means for interacting more responsively to promote children’s use of pivotal developmental behaviors.
Competency 3. Conduct an RT intervention session with a parent and child as described in the RT curriculum guide, Guidelines for Conducting Intervention Session (Chapter 8).
We will review the session plans that are submitted with your monthly case study reports and provide feedback on your planning. We will also provide a written report of the first two video recordings that are submitted two to three weeks after we receive them. This will include suggestions about using RT strategies or conducting intervention sessions.
Those who complete their case studies and whose video recorded sessions receive satisfactory ratings will receive a certificate indicating they are a Certified Responsive Teaching Provider and will be added to our data base of Certified Providers which will be published on our web site www.ResponsiveTeaching.org.
Participants who do not meet criteria for certification may submit one additional video observation for re-evaluation at no additional cost within the 12 month subscription period for the Professional Consultation Program.
